The Alarm Installation Process

Once you have selected the product that is right for your Melbourne, Brisbane or Gold Coast property and called our team to book your security alarm installation in the relevant area, the following is a rough "rule of thumb" that explains some of the logistics and times involved in installing some of our Security products.

1: Planning Sensor, Camera or Detector Locations

Selecting the right location for any camera, sensor or detector is the first step in the installation process. Regardless of the property’s location e.g. Melbourne, Gold Coast or Brisbane, the factors taken into consideration to select the right installation position is the same. The Field of View (FOV) of the particular device or the general coverage the unit provides is the main factor that determines the required location.

A Motion Detector’s FOV is determined by heat and light impacting the area of detection, whereas a Camera’s FOV is dictated by the lens size. Please select the relevant links for a more detailed explanation on FOV and the impact it has on selecting an appropriate installation location.

2: Base Unit or Alarm Panel Location

Next is selecting the location of the base unit, be it the Alarm Panel, the DVR/NVR or the Intercom indoor monitor.

It is advised that the Alarm panel is installed in a somewhat concealed or out of the way location. The location of the DVR/NVR (recording station) is the customer’s preference. There are options to integrate the system into a customer’s home TV systems, other options include a more obscure location. The positioning of the indoor Monitor for intercom systems is again the customer’s choice. However, cable runs play a major part in this decision unless a wireless system is to be installed.

3: Product Types

Choosing what type of camera, detector, sensor or intercom system you require is based on preference and a few different factors. We advocate the use of hard wired systems for single storey homes. This eradicates the need for replacing batteries and dealing with the sleep modes of each product. A multi-storey building will usually combine the use of both wired and wireless systems.

Alarm Systems

In the case of installing motion, smoke or other detectors into a ceiling with little to no roof access space, there are two alarm installation options for us to consider:

  • Install wireless detectors on these particular floors and a wireless receiver module within the alarm panel.

  • Insert the required cabling to externally mounted conduit and drill entry holes from floor to floor (this is a very labour intensive option and quite an eye sore. We avoid this method wherever possible)

CCTV Cameras

Whilst there are a myriad of mounting options for CCTV Cameras when you place mounting brackets into the equation, the following is a simple overview of the basic cameras out of the box options.

There are three main types of CCTV camera based on their installation type and FOV. Whilst there are multiple mounting options for these CCTV cameras, the following is a basic overview of the main camera types.

Bullet Camera

Bullet CCTV Cameras Brisbane
Bullet cameras are often installed to external locations that require a narrow distance view. Ideal for driveways, carparks and other larger external spaces. The bullet options have a versatile FOV once they have been mounted as they have a 360 degree range of motion.

Dome Camera

Dome CCTV Surveillance Cameras Brisbane

Generally the dome options are installed internally. Although these cameras offer a water proof rating of 66 and can be installed externally, but are preferably an indoor option. This camera has a restricted mounting position as if it is mounted vertically then you cannot move the lens from left to right without rotating the cameras view, as a result if mounted this way you are restricted to vertical adjustments only.

Box Camera

The Box cameras are usually installed where a dedicated and specific location with good focus is required to be viewed or recorded – IE a shop’s cash register.

Above all the FOV for Cameras is depicted by the Lens size – please review the Lenses Explained page.

4: Power

The location of the power outlet is an important part of alarms installation. The control panel, recording units or the intercom monitor all require power. If a general power outlet is required in a new location, our qualified electrician can be booked to install the outlet in the preferred location. This allows us to complete the security alarm installation in your chosen area of the property.
